Water electrolysers are being developed as a method of storing renewable energy as a route to creating hydrogen for fuel cell cars as well as for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals.
Alkaline water electrolysers (AWE) are particularly popular as they can operate using base metal catalysts instead of needing precious group metal (PGM) catalysts, which are required in the operation of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) hydrogen electrolyser technology.
Florida-based Dioxide Materials has improved the performance of the AWE technology by producing low cost hydrogen, without the use of PGMs, and the ability to operate at high current densities comparable to PEM technology.
A key advantage of Dioxide Materials’ AWE technology is its ability to produce pure hydrogen on-site and on-demand, so it does not have to be stored.
The technology facilities a more cost-effective method for hydrogen production and use compared to having it supplied in high-pressure cylinders.
The technology is easy to scale using modular units that can be interconnected to achieve the desired output while enabling low-capex production of carbon-neutral hydrogen.
“When scaled, Dioxide Materials’ electrolysers will be able to use hundreds of MW of electricity at one time and because they can be turned on/off depending on when renewable energy sources produce more energy than the grid can use, they can offset some of the renewable energy that would otherwise be curtailed,” said Rich Masel, Founder and CEO of Dioxide Materials.
